Consistent crashes with Leapfrog and Repetier (no replies)

My experience with 3D printing is limited, and I have most certainly dived in at the deep end. I have thus far managed to overcome hardware problems, twice, and believe I could now build one of these devices. That is as long as I could source the control components, I will not venture to the electronics. The mechanical issues, I believe I have in hand.
I have now had repeated failures of communication. The computer and printer simply say "Disconnected' and the printing stops. In the last case it was 3 hrs into a 6+ hr print, just a little after it stopped yesterday. I have the Leapfrog Creatr connected to my PC which I have been using most of the day to supervise the printing. I have at last got the filament feed reliable, just, so I can now leave the room. The USB cable is new, USB2, but 5m long to take the noise from my desk. If it must be shorter, I have to get another dedicated computer, or perhaps a higher quality cable. Suggestions?

I actually heard the computer disconnect tones this time, and the printer stop. That is where it is right now.

Can anyone tell me a way to restart printing so that i do not lose a print that is half way through?

Has anyone had to deal with this issue before?
Any suggestions, I am running Windows 7. Just cannot afford to leave the computer totally idle otherwise for this length of time. I have other work to do, and have been spending the time researching plastics that better suit my needs as well as techniques that manage the problems I have experienced with the printer, and software
